Epicenter Located Near Fukushima, Tsunami Warning Issued

Magnitude 8.9 Quake Triggers Power Outages, Building Collapses

A massive earthquake struck off the coast of Japan on Saturday, March 25, causing widespread damage and triggering a tsunami warning. The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 8.9, struck at 2:46 p.m. local time (12:46 a.m. GMT) and was centered about 230 kilometers (140 miles) east of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture.

The quake was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, including one of magnitude 7.4 that struck an hour later. The quake has caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure across the region, including the collapse of several buildings in Sendai and other cities. Power outages have also been reported in several areas.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific coastline of Japan, as well as parts of Russia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The warning is in effect for five meters (16 feet) or more of tsunami waves. Residents in affected areas are urged to evacuate to higher ground immediately.

The quake is the strongest to hit Japan since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, which killed more than 15,000 people and triggered a massive tsunami that devastated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
